Rethink and Discovery IV Program Offered Mills an Opportunity
to Participate in PIMA's 84th Annual International Management
Conference on June 30, 2003
New
York - July 2, 2003 - The Center for Paper Business and Industry
Studies (CPBIS) and the Paper Industry Management Association
(PIMA) hosted the "Rethink and Discovery IV" program
at PIMA's 84th Annual International Management Conference on June 30, 2003. The program was simultaneously Web-broadcasted Live over the Internet to facilitate interactive
participation by paper industry professionals worldwide. It
was also recorded. The fee for the webcast is $385 per viewing
location.
The first session, "How
to Succeed in a Changing Marketplace and Business Culture",
was held from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time (GMT-4).
The changing marketplace places unique pressures on the internal
company structures of paper companies. Dealing with external
forces that affect a company's structure and culture are key
to a company's success. This distinguished panel debated how
to succeed in the "eye of the storm" that is today's
marketplace. The panel was moderated by Bowen Smith,
director of UBS Warburg, and included Michael Golden,
vice-chairman and senior vice-president, New York Times Company; A.D. "Pete" Correll, chairman and CEO, Georgia-Pacific
Corporation; Steven B. Buckman, CEO, Buckman Laboratories
Intl.; Hans Müller, CEO, Voith Paper Holding;
and Jan Åström, president & CEO, Svenska
Cellulosa AB SCA, Sweden. The presentations of the panel members

The second session, "Review
of the Marketplace by the End Consumer", was
from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time (GMT-4). The
key to success in any business is a clear understanding of
your customers' expectations and how best to serve your major
clients. The paper industry is no exception, but does our
industry behave as if it grasps this crucial concept? The
panel was moderated by Rod Young, Resource Information
Systems, and included Alan Procter, Alan R. Procter
Consulting, Inc.; Judy Lowe, Procter & Gamble; Lisa Taner, The New York Times Company; Mark Eisner,
Hachette Filipacchi Media US, Inc.; and David Refkin,

The Rethink and Discovery sessions compose a "Thought-Leadership
Program" designed to reveal business and technological
views that help clarify understanding and stimulate an industry-wide
change and transformation process for the pulp and paper industry.
The first Rethink & Discovery program "Beyond
Today's Paper Machine" was Web-cast from Paper Summit
2002 held in March at the Georgia World Congress Center in
Atlanta. Looking at gaps, needs, and barriers in the technology
and business-management arenas for the paper industry, the
first program had some 150 conference attendees. The broadcast
attracted interactive participation from 36 other multi-participant
locations around the world and included real-time questions
and views submitted to the panelists from Finland, Brazil,
England, Spain, Mexico, and the U.S.
Rethink and Discovery II focused on division and mill-level
operations management issues. It was held at PIMA's 83rd Annual
International Management Conference , June 19-21, 2002, in
San Francisco, California. There were two panel sessions,
one with a former as well as the current and incoming PIMA
presidents and one with seven mill-level management leaders.
Rethink and Discovery III focused on innovation and
industry training and learning issues. It was held at the
NCSU Pulp & Paper Foundation's Annual Conference in Raleigh,
North Carolina, on October 10, 2002. Dr. Richard B. Phillips,
senior vice-president of Technology at International Paper,
delivered the program's keynote. His address focused on the
realities of the role of off-shore, new-capacity expansion
and the implications for North America producers. More information
on the previous sessions and their recorded webcasts is available
