Patrick S. McCarthy is Chair of the School of Economics in Ivan Allen College at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His areas of research include transportation economics, market structures, government regulation, and civil infrastructure.

Professor McCarthy has served on review panels or completed commissioned reports for the National Research Council Committees. And he has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, and the Government of Quebec. He has consulted on transportation matter to various public and private sector clients.

Professor McCarthy is the author of Transportation Economics Theory and Practice: A Case Study Approach (Blackwell Publishers 2001). He has published widely in academic journals and volumes, including the Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Inquiry, Applied Economics, Economics Letters, Journal of Regulatory Economics, Journal of Infrastructure Systems, Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, Logistics and Transportation Review, Transportation Research, and Regional Science and Urban Economics.

Professor McCarthy is an associate editor of Transportation Research and the Journal of the Transportation Research Forum. He previously taught for twenty-two years at Purdue University, where he was Professor of Economics and Civil Engineering. Professor McCarthy has been a visiting professor or fellow at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration in Greece, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the University of Southern California. His first academic appointment was at Concordia University in Montreal.

Professor McCarthy earned a Ph.D. in economics in 1976 from the Claremont Graduate School and a B.A. in economics in 1971 from the University of San Diego.
